The Harvard Business Review Analytic Services report, “Driving Digital Transformation: New Skills for Leaders, New Role for the CIO,” revealed seven strategies for CIOs who want to more effectively lead digital transformation. The first was to start by building a foundation of trust.

This essential step can make it easier for business leaders to understand and mitigate the limitations of their digital knowledge by opening new lines of communication and collaboration with IT, especially when they are funding, contracting, or developing technology initiatives outside of the IT department. When they do, CIOs can either choose to “protect their turf” or support their business partners by coaching them on digital strategies. It comes as no surprise that nearly half of companies categorized as digital transformation laggards have “turf protector” CIOs.

IT’s mission is changing. If a CIO and other company leaders have a close working relationship, they’re more apt to avoid pitfalls and create the right alignment and partnership for digital success to blossom.
